MOScout Daily Update: Coleman, Spencer Get Sole MRL Endorsements - House Primary Guide: MidMO - Derges Trial Begins and more...

More on MRL Endorsements

I wrote on Saturday that word was spreading that Missouri Right to Life PAC had endorsed challengers to Republican incumbent senators seeking re-election – all of whom would be deemed pro-life by any reasonable standard.

I’m told the full endorsement list will be made public some time today, but I’ve also learned that…

·         Former Rep. Bryan Spencer has received the sole endorsement in Senate 10.

·         Rep. Mary Elizabeth Coleman has received the sole endorsement in Senate 22

Meanwhile lots of pro-life folks in the capitol have shared thoughts souring on MRL…

·         It’s ducking insane. They are denying legislators who voted for the trigger law to Roe… Seriously just ducking nonsense

·         MRL’s obsession with ancillary issues will not end well. Instead of taking a well-earned victory lap, they choose to attack core supporters in an attempt to stay relevant.

·         Absolutely insane.

And one notes that last cycle Holly Rehder Thompson prevailed over Kathy Swan even though MRL went with Swan.

MOScout House Primary Report: Mid-MO

In this report…

House 42 – Open seat. Three-way Republican primary.

House 47 – Open seat. Two-way Democratic primary.

House 49 – Open seat. Three-way Republican primary.

House 57 – Incumbent Rodger Reedy challenged.

House 58 – Incumbent Willard Haley challenged.

House 59 – Incumbent Rudy Veit challenged.

House 120 – Incumbent Ron Copeland challenged.

House 122 – Open seat. Two-way Republican primary.

House 123 – Incumbent Lisa Thomas challenged.

·         Pull quote from Matthew Williams primarying Rep. Ron Copeland“To be honest when I first get into office I want to address seat belt laws…I think that our seat belt laws need to be abolished.”  See it here.

Gun Deal Includes “Red Flag” Incentives

NYTimes reports that the compromise on gun laws in the Senate “includes federal incentives for states to enact so-called red flag laws to seize guns temporarily from those deemed a threat to themselves and others.”

·         Folks following Missouri politics know that there’s probably no amount of money from the federal government that will entice the general assembly to pass red flag laws.  But as always, we’ll see….

Derges Trial Today

MissouriNet reports

·         The trial for State Representative Tricia Derges, R-Nixa, begins Monday at a federal courthouse in southwest Missouri’s Springfield.

·         She is accused of scheming victims from 2018 to 2020, illegally prescribing narcotics, and lying to federal agents.

·         Derges has maintained her innocence and has refused calls by House Republican leadership to resign. Earlier this year, the Missouri Republican Party refused to take a required filing fee from Derges to allow her to run for office again.

·         Jury selection is expected to take up the bulk of Monday’s work. Don Ledford, with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Missouri tells Missourinet the trial is scheduled to last two weeks.

Gubby Appts

Governor Mike Parson announced two appointments to the Regional Convention and Sports Complex Authority and filled one county office vacancy.

·         Cheston Easter, of Princeton, was appointed as the Mercer County First District Commissioner.

·         Leah Reynolds Harris, of St. Louis, was appointed to the Regional Convention and Sports Complex Authority.

·         Phillip Torrisi, of St. Louis, was appointed to the Regional Convention and Sports Complex Authority.

eMailbag on Senate Races

·         When I read the poll I was stunned [Tracy McCreery’s] number was that high.  How high is any other candidate running in an open seat, most of whom have been running for their respective senate seat too for the same time... Has of them even broken into the 30’s?..  She is already at 50%. That is huge - but nice spin by whomever wrote that comment. She has 2% to go to win the race btw.

·         Notably absent from [Jeff] Roorda’s endorsements was the Missouri FOP. Wonder if they’re not going to endorse him. If so, that’s embarrassing for someone trying to run almost exclusively on police issues.
