Caleb Jones and his wife Lindsay introduced Max!... and also yesterday former Schmitt staffer Shawn Furey and wife (former Rupp staffer) Melissa gave birth to a little girl, Reagan. Congrats! Congrats! Congrats!
Override Bits
Vote on All the Bills
The House is expected to vote on all their override bills. This decision, coming out of summer caucus, eliminated the guessing game. Since the legislators are already on the record with their session votes, the feeling was that there’s not much more additional damage to a second vote on the controversial bills.
Override Record?
By voting on all the bills, Republicans think they have a shot at three to seven overrides. See the MOScout Veto Session Cheat Sheet here, to see how the votes broke down during session.
HB 253
Republican House leadership is still saying that there are “no firm Nos.” The voting board –which can stay open for 30 minutes before locking – will likely be left open that long, making any Republican who votes No (and stays in the chamber) sweat out their defection.
But clearly there are real defections – including Rep. Don Phillips. He’s on the record – on his office answering machine – saying he’s a No. Listen to it here. Seems pretty firm.
Follow-Up House GOP Summer Caucus
Let Them Eat Steak?
Dem snark: “Does it strike you odd that the Republicans hosted their dinner with folks on Friday night at Tony’s downtown? One of the most expensive restaurants! All while they make cuts to the needy in MO.”
Perspective
The Republicans reportedly raised over $500K in this one event, over a year out from the 2014 elections. Last cycle, the House Democratic Campaign Committee spent $503K for the whole cycle…
Seniors Voting
I had another Republican tell me that the vote for seniors to vote on the next speaker was a victory for Caleb Jones. The vote was 57-40. That small senior class looks pretty evenly split to me, but we’ll see….
Hanaway Follow-Up
A few people mentioned to me that Catherine Hanaway may be over-estimating her residual name ID, which they think is now about 3% in Mid-MO and out-state. People in St. Louis County may remember who she is, but she’s starting from scratch elsewhere.
It’s said that she’s targeting the governor’s office – in part because after being a US Attorney any other office would be perceived as a “step down.”
But Tom Schwiech is still eyeing the governor’s office as well in 2016, so we’ll see how those two maneuver. One Republican wondered aloud to me if both Hanaway and Schweich might really be more interested in US Senate in 2018 (the Claire McCaskill seat)…
Dildine for House 41
Dan Dildine filed a committee to run for House 41 as a Democrat. The current incumbent, Democrat Ed Schieffer, is termed. Daldine is a lawyer in Troy. It’s expected this will be a hotly contested seat in 2014.
Citizens for Responsible Research
Probably more information to come, but last Friday a new campaign committee was filed, Citizens for Responsible Research, which will apparently be involved in the KC sales tax to recruit researchers. The treasurer is Brad Bradshaw, who you may know as “America’s Semitruck and Birth Injury Lawyer.”
Bits
Yesterday another damning article about Charlie Dooley and his inner circle. Read it here. It inspired this tweet from Tony Messenger, Post-Dispatch editorial page editor: “Pretty much only one conclusion from this story: Either John Temporiti lies a lot, or everybody else is all the time”
Cerner seeks $1.2 billion in tax incentives and subsidies for their Bannister Mall project. See it here. Republican snark: “I'M CONFUSED!!!!! Sen. Brad Lager (and Rep. Eric Burlison) beat up companies that seek tax incentives but the Company they work for wants $1.2 billion?!?!”
DESE continues their two-day meeting today. High on the agenda today is a long term plan for unaccredited districts…
