MOScout Weekender: Poll Trump vs Dems - Arthur Gets Opponent - New Approach Raises Cash - Hallway on Session - WWTW and more...

Arthur Gets Opponent

Mickey Younghanz filed to run against Sen. Lauren Arthur in Senate 17.  He doesn’t appear to be much of a threat.

·         A brief internet search shows his twitter account has 13 followers.

·         He’s also known as Mickey “Funk” Younghanz.

New Approach Continues to Raise $$$

In the large contributions (below) Missourians for a New Approach received a six-figure check from New Approach PAC. This brings their total fundraising in the past two months to over $700,000.

New Approach is working toward a new ballot initiative which would create a parallel system of licensing for legal marijuana – not requiring a medical condition.

·         It’s not clear if Missourians are ready for legal marijuana.

·         Creating a whole new set of producers and dispensaries would potentially reduce the value of those licenses granted under the medical marijuana amendment, threatening their business model.

Sample of Comments

·         You’re not asking the right question. Some of these things will only happen if they all happen. So it should be which of these things needs to happen to break the log jam on the others and I think it’s PDMP.

·         The battle with Wayfair isn’t the Wayfair provision itself, but where the new revenues go. That is why Wayfair won’t pass.

·         I think a couple of those will pass, but the most likely is Wayfair. It’s just what form and how much revenue a couple folks in the Senate want to give away.

·         [Internet sales tax] will produce revenue. Ergo, easier to find some compromise.

Who Won the Week?

Senate leadership – First, CLEANER passed out, and now a compromise reached on tort reform.  They’re checking off major priorities before Spring break and keeping the chambers’ denizens relatively happy.  Now let’s see what magic trick they can pull with PDMP….

Rural Republicans – Dems appear to have narrowed their focus this year to swing district they can win, the so-called “Claire districts” where McCaskill beat Hawley in 2018.  That means a lot of rural Republicans will get a pass.

Jeanette Mott Oxford – Announces that she’s pulling back from her executive director duties to focus on what she loves.  She’ll become Empower Missouri’s Policy & Organizing Director, and the organization will seek a new ED.

Zach Brunnert – Gets a new gig ad heads to Minnesota to serve as Director of State Legislative Policy for CDI under task-master Kit Crancer.
