MOScout Daily Update: Special Session on The Slow Track - Anti-MedEx Campaign Lacks Big $$$ - Grier to White House and more....

Special Session Hits The Slow Track

Legislative sources say it’s unlikely that the special session will begin in earnest until after the August primary.

Governor Mike Parson’s call has the extraordinary session to begin Monday July 27.  And officially, it may gavel in on that day.  Still, but don’t expect much to happen that week.

Right now, the plan is for legislation to start in the Senate.  And I’m told they’re probably not going to get moving on any items until after the primary elections.

Anti-MedEx Going the “Grassroots” Route?

With no big checks coming into the committee formed to oppose Medicaid expansion, it appears that opponents are working the social media angle.

Dozens of Republican legislators and elected officials have made short videos exhorting viewers to vote No on the ballot question.  See them here.

One opponent calls this “a targeted, surgical, aggressive, social media, grassroots campaign… to sow enough doubt and chip away enough support that 3-5% of voters add themselves to the ‘no’ column.”  They also believe “these efforts will also be supported by statewide radio (via AFP-MO).”

Grier to White House

Press release:  Following the signing of HB 2046 into law, Representative Derek Grier [was] recognized by the White House as a champion of regulatory reform…

“It is an honor to be invited to the White House and be recognized for reform that makes Missouri the nationwide leader in knocking down harmful barriers to entry and allowing greater worker mobility,” said Rep Grier before the event.

On July 6th, Governor Mike Parson signed HB 2046 into law. HB 2046, sponsored by Representative Derek Grier, expands license reciprocity provisions in Missouri. The newly signed bill recognizes occupational licenses held by workers coming to Missouri from other states. Any licensed individual coming to Missouri who has been practicing their profession in good standing for a year is eligible to receive a Missouri license, eliminating duplicative and often costly requirements to gain government permission to work. The bill also bolsters workforce development and criminal justice reform with its inclusion of the Expanded Apprenticeship Act and the Fresh Start Act….

Yikers!

Columbia Missourian reports that Moresource Inc has some screwy dealings going on.  See it here.  One potential victim is a non-profit headed by lobbyist Craig Stevenson.

A Columbia company that alleges it lost more than $75,000 after its payroll management company failed to hand over payroll taxes to the IRS has taken legal action. TrueSon Exteriors, a local construction and renovation business, sued Moresource, Inc.on June 25 in the 13th Circuit Court for negligence and breach of contract… Court documents state Moresource had access to TrueSon Exteriors’ bank accounts to be able to pull money for these taxes. While the money was drawn from their account, it allegedly never made it to the IRS. Barry Roewe, owner and president of TrueSon Exteriors, said he originally thought the IRS’s letter was “just a piece of paperwork” that he needed to send to Moresource. He soon discovered the issue ran deeper when Moresource officials couldn’t tell him what happened to his company’s money, he said… Court documents state Moresource has not and will not tell TrueSon Exteriors what happened to their money. Attorney Tim Gerding is representing TrueSon Exteriors and said communication with Moresource had not improved as of Tuesday morning… Craig Stevenson, president of the board of directors of Mozambique Orphanage Fund, a small nonprofit organization dedicated to financially supporting orphans and vulnerable children in Mozambique, Africa, said the nonprofit also received a letter from the IRS in June stating it owed around $2,000 in tax liabilities for the fourth fiscal quarter 2019. Just like TrueSon Exteriors, Mozambique Orphanage Fund used Moresource to manage its payroll…
