Election Results and What They Mean

Nationally the big news was the Republican victory in the Virginian gubernatorial race.  Aside from hometown pride that Missouri strongman Jeff Roe carried the flag for the upset, I don’t think there’s a whole lot of meaning for us here.

If we were less red and more purple, this might be a great omen for Republicans.  But they’re already favorites in 2022 (hate to harp, but Dems don’t even have a candidate for auditor yet).  Does this mean we start the cycle assuming the Republican US Senate candidate will win by 13 points instead of just 12 points?  I don’t know that it means much…

·         But Rep. Shamed Dogan sees something!  On Twitter, he sees a wining message for his campaign against Democratic incumbent Sam PageVirginia said NO to McAuliffe after he said parents should have no say in what their kids are taught. St. Louis County voters will have the opportunity to do the same next November and #FireSamPage!

Other Results

·         In Nixa mayor Brian Steele survived a mask-backlash recall.  KY3: The recall failed by 75% of the vote, which means Mayor Steele can serve the remainder of his term, which ends in April of 2023… When the city council gave him emergency powers to deal with the pandemic, he approved the mask mandate through an executive order. Backers of the recall argued the full council should have approved the mandate, which expired in April.

·         Butler County use tax goes down in flames… with 28% in favor.  Meanwhile, Southeast Missourian reports the use tax did pass in Cape Girardeau, while failing in three other municipalities: Delta, Jackson, and Scott City.

·         City of Independence overwhelming the Citizens for More Police campaign shifting funds from a no-kill shelter to the police department.  It passed with 75%.

·         A Transportation Development District in the City of Kirkwood failed 46% - 54%.

·         Sales taxes passed by wide margins in Jefferson City (for police) and Columbia (for parks).

“Driving” The Day: Parson Tees Up PGA Event

Press advisory: Governor Mike Parson will join Department of Economic Development Acting Director Maggie Kost, St. Louis leaders, and representatives from the Professional Golfers' Association (PGA) for an announcement regarding a major upcoming sporting event.

Wednesday, November 3, 2021

When:     11:00 a.m.

Where:     Bellerive Country Club

·         St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that “Bellerive Country Club will be the site of the 2030 Presidents Cup, a tournament pitting golfers from the U.S. against top players around the world.”

Also in CD-7

Springfield News-Leader does a run-down of who’s in the CD-7 race to replace Congressman Billy LongSee it here. They mention a couple people I hadn’t heard of.  I’m too easily bubblized: if someone doesn’t have a consultant, or hasn’t held office before, they’re not on my radar.

·         Audrey Richards (website).  SNL: A Joplin native and graduate of George Washington University, Richards has never held elected office but has spent time in Washington, working for the federal Office of the Comptroller of Currency for six years.

·         Paul Walker. SNL: A retired Army colonel, political science instructor and author… of several books on U.S. history, including "Truman's Dilemma: Invasion or the Bomb" and "Cavalry Battle That Saved the Union: Custer vs. Stuart at Gettysburg."

More on Education IP Lawsuit

Missouri Independent did a follow-on article to my education-Ashcroft lawsuit blurb yesterday.  See it here.

In response school choice advocate Jean Evans vowed a fight… “If passed, this initiative would remove children, particularly low-to-middle-income students and children with disabilities, from the schools of their dreams and return them to the failing school districts where they live. The Missouri Federation for Children and our allies will fight against any attempt to limit educational options for special needs and low-income students stuck in failing, one-size-fits all schools.”

Schatz on Gray Machines

Pro Tem Dave Schatz tells the Post-Dispatch that he likes the sports wagering initiative petition idea because it might disentangle the “gray machines” debate a bit.  See the article here.

·         “The initiative petition may take that item out of the mix,” Schatz said. “It might unwind that a little bit.”

·         The effort to ban illegal slot machines, launch sports betting and approve a regulated and taxed system of video gaming have been intertwined throughout ongoing debate over the past three years, resulting in gridlock.

ROTO (Reminder of the Obvious)

Even a successful IP wouldn’t be passed until November 2022, so this probably doesn’t change the calculus a whole lot for this next session.
