MOScout Daily Update: Jones and Bailey Dance on Guns - SCOMO Panel - Richard Park - Shawan Dings Kehoe and more...

Bailey and Jones Square Off On Guns

St. Louis City Mayor Tishaura Jones announced she plans to try to outlaw certain firearms within the city limits…

One pro-Bailey consultant cheered: Andrew Bailey gets a softball tossed to him from big city progressive and continues leading the conversation on the right on the biggest cultural issues of the day.

Indeed, Bailey quickly issued a “warning letter” to Jones.  Read it here.

To implement your plan would be to violate Missouri law. By this letter, let me be clear – I will zealously perform my constitutional duty to defend the rights of each law-abiding citizen to “keep and bear arms … in defense of [their] home, person, family and property…” which is the promise made to them by the Missouri Constitution. Mo. Const. art. I, § 23… In other words, I encourage you to go after criminals, not guns…

SCOMO Panel

The Appellate Judicial Commission, announces the panel of nominees to fill the vacancy on the Missouri Supreme Court.  See the press release here.

After nearly eight hours of public interviews, approximately three hours of deliberations, and eight rounds of balloting, the nominees are Kelly C. Broniec, Michael E. Gardner and Ginger K. Gooch.

·       Broniec is chief judge of the Missouri Court of Appeals, Eastern District, in St. Louis. She was born in 1971 and resides in Montgomery City. She earned her bachelor of arts, summa cum laude, in business administration from what is now William Woods University in Fulton and her law degree in 1996 from the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Law. She received seven votes.

·       Gardner is a judge on the Missouri Court of Appeals, Eastern District, in St. Louis. He was born in 1979 and resides in Cape Girardeau. He earned his bachelor of arts in political science in 2001 from the University of Missouri-Columbia and his law degree, cum laude, in 2004, from the MU School of Law. He received seven votes.

·       Gooch is a judge on the Missouri Court of Appeals, Southern District, in Springfield. She was born in 1975 and resides in Springfield. She earned her bachelor of arts, summa cum laude, in English and philosophy, law and rhetoric in 1997 from Stephens College in Columbia and her law degree, cum laude, in 2000 from the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Law. She received seven votes.

What It Means

·       MOScouter: This panel is designed for the governor to pick Gooch, a female from Southwest Missouri.

·       The governor has 60 days to select one member of the panel to fill the vacancy. Should he fail to do so, the Missouri Constitution directs the commission to make the appointment.

Joplin to Name Park for Richard

From the Joplin GlobeThe Campbell Parkway park and trail will now be known as Sen. Ron Richard Memorial Park as the result of City Council action to memorialize the Joplin lawmaker. The council voted to rename the park in Richard’s honor with his family looking on at Monday night’s meeting… A key figure in local and state politics, Richard was the only state lawmaker to be elected as both House speaker and later as Senate president pro tem. That was after his service from 1990 to 1998 on the City Council, the latter four years of which as mayor.

Shawan Endorses Ashcroft

Writing in the Missouri Times, former Rep. Jeff Shawan endorsed Jay Ashcroft for governor.

For Missouri Republicans, there is an easy choice in next year’s gubernatorial primary: Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft. Ashcroft recently secured the exclusive endorsement of Missouri Right to Life for his staunch pro-life record, giving GOP voters yet another reason to support his candidacy. Since they announced their endorsement, the political establishment, including Lt. Governor Mike Kehoe and the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, have waged an aggressive campaign against Missouri’s pro-life protections and are advocating for a repeal of many of Missouri’s pro-life policies.

What It Means

One Republican consultant thinks the op/ed means two things…

1) Kehoe got involved in his 2020 state senate primary to help Jason Bean and Shawan hasn’t forgotten.

2) Shawan is not opposed to challenging Bean in a rematch, perhaps thinking this in a head-to-head, he’s from the right part of the district with a better record.  Shawan spent $100K of his own money in his last race. That’s all it took for Jill Carter to beat Bill White

eMailbag: Soros, IP Reform, Etc

·       The Republican who believes conservatives face an "existential threat" if they cannot rig Missouri ballot amendment rules in their favor should worry less about a 93-year-old boogieman named Soros, and more about how he's going to convince voters to voluntarily weaken their own century-old constitutional power to trump politicians via citizen ballot initiatives. The Realtors know it's cheaper and easier to run a successful "No" campaign against whatever silliness the legislature puts onto the ballot to gut the IP process. The actual "existential threat" to conservatives on their more extreme positions is that most Missourians simply don't agree with them.

·       IP reform is about stopping George Soros?  Really? Soros had no role in the major IPs in recent years that overrode the legislature's stance.  Medicaid expansion—the Missouri Chamber of Commerce, local chambers and the hospital association had the major roles, medical and then recreational marijuana were funded by those involved in those industries.  RTW rejection was not a constitutional amendment but a different provision of the Missouri constitution so would not have been affected by IP "reform" and not funded by Soros…
