MOScout Daily Update: Bell and the Flipping Trifecta - Wasser Takes MOSoy Reins - Chiefs Give $$$ to HRCC and more…

Bell and the Flipping Trifectas

If Republicans have their way, drawing up a “7-1” map and redistricting away Democratic Congressman Emanuel Cleaver, the result will be a single Democratic official representing Missouri in Washington DC.  All others will be Republican.

While Missouri had become reliably red, the nation remains evenly divided.  And although Republicans now hold the White House and both chambers of Congress, it’d be unusual for that not to change.  In fact, if history is a guide, it wouldn’t be a surprise for both chambers and the White House to flip during the coming decade.  That scenario is closer to the rule than the exception.  At that point, all roads from Missouri to the White House would run through Congressman Wesley Bell.

This has happened in other states.  For example, Congresswoman Sharice Davids in the beginning of Biden’s term was Kansas’ lone Democrat.  She helped sell the Biden infrastructure package, which included multibillion-dollar Kansas impacts, illustrating how a single majority-party member can become the go-to person in a delegation otherwise controlled by the opposite party.

Recent history…

  • 2001 – At the start of George W. Bush’s presidency, Republicans held a trifecta (White House, Senate and House)

  • 2009 – With the election of Barack Obama, Democrats grabbed a trifecta.

  • 2017 – Donald Trump’s victory in 2016 returned the trifecta to Republicans.

  • 2021 – Joe Biden entered office and soon afterwards secured a Democratic trifecta

  • 2025 – Once again, with the second Trump Administration, the GOP has the trifecta.

What It Means

Democrats who might want a federal appointment in the future: Bell might be the sole conduit to a Democratic White House/Congress during any future blue shift.
