A5: Bad Omen in St. Charles

Reporter Mark Maxwell asked the three Republican candidates for St. Charles County Executive to raise their hands if they were voting for Amendment 5.  Not one of them would.  See it here.

These are three REPUBLICAN candidates in a solidly Republican county with a bunch of primary voters.  That’s a bad sign for A5.

1. Nothing. He can say he tried to fulfill his campaign pledge… 10.5%

2. A temporary embarrassment, no lasting impact… 31.6%

3. Less political capital, reduced leverage with the legislature… 42.1%

4. A serious blow, opens the door for a primary challenge… 15.8%

·       Can you pivot from this and say I did what I said I would do - yes. Let's be honest- this has been the economic policy since the special sessions-what is his economic policy if this goes down?

·       His record is not stellar if this fails. He called a special to keep the Chiefs, they left. New congressional maps that some Republicans weren’t thrilled with. Plus it’s likely A4 and abortion fails. After 2 years, what is his shining accomplishment besides public safety, which could cost the state $1 BILLION to construct a new prison.

·       Some will take the opportunity to try to blame him for supporting a measure Missourians voted down but he did the heavy lifting to give voters the chance to make their voices heard.

·       It's a huge loss for him.

·       The A5 consultants completely blew it on the messaging and ad campaign. It's not the Governor's fault, but he will suffer the consequences.

Kansas City - Six matches, 413,169 fans and 99.7% capacity gave KC a summer to remember.

Wesley Bell - Bell’s huge fundraising lead and nearly $2.5 million in outside support leaves Cori Bush fighting an uphill media war.

Chris Stigall - A Graves-linked campaign finance complaint put Nathan Willett on defense while outside spending already heavily favored Stigall.

Missouri’s Catholic bishops - By warning that Amendment 5 could hurt poorer Missourians, they gave opponents a culturally conservative messenger for the closing stretch.

Early voters - Vote early and toss the mailers in the trash.
