MOScout Daily Update: MNEA Summary Language Deathblow - More on Senate 5 - Rex-Trent Fundy and more...
Proposed Summary Statement for MNEA IPs
The secretary of state’s proposed summary statements for the various initiative petitions proposed by the Missouri NEA amount to a deathblow.
In all the versions of the petitions, the summary statements say the IPs would “allow the General Assembly to enact state taxes to fund public schools without voter approval.”
That will surely be unpopular with Missouri voters.
In some versions which deal with a provision concerning whether a school has an elected board, the SOS summary statement says the IPs would “remove the requirement to fund schools not governed by a publicly elected board, such as charter schools or unaccredited school districts.”
One building denizen following the situation closely summed it up, “[Jay] Ashcroft didn’t do them any favors!”
Do you want to amend the Missouri Constitution to:
• allow the General Assembly to enact state taxes to fund public schools without voter approval;
• require the General Assembly to "adequately and equitably" fund public schools (and certain voluntary early childhood education programs), in an amount that could exceed the current minimum of 25% of state revenue;
• make "equality of educational opportunity" through public schools a fundamental right; and
• prohibit state and local governments from financially supporting private schools?
eMailbag on Senate 5
One observer says I forgot to look deeper into the fundraising reports of the Senate 5 race. While “[you] noted Sherod's $10k loan to herself out of her $55k raised. Roberts still owes himself $72k of his $91k and Green gave herself $7k of her $18k (notably well short of her announced $25k goal by the end of September)... Sherod blew the other two away this quarter if you ask me.”
Meanwhile
Roberts fundraiser last night had a diverse crowd of St. Louis city and county residents. “Elected officials included President Lewis Reed, Sheriff Vernon Betts, several city alderman, committeeman and committeewomen, state representatives and senator Karla May. Several labor officials including head of firefighters. Corporate leaders from Spire, Ameren, Centene and BJC and others. Major law firms were in attendance like Jerry Hunter, Ed Dowd, Mark Johnson, and Travis Noble…”
Trent’s Event
Rep. Curtis Trent’s fundraiser hosted by Rex Sinquefield was a hot ticket, with supports cheering it as boosting the momentum behind his bid for majority floor leader . One attendee called it an “extremely successful event. Major lobbyists teams as well as Team Sinquefield, Team Humphrey, and Team Steward.”
Another said hosting the event was the “first time Sinquefields have done this for a State Rep or Senator.”
