MOScout Daily Update: KC Less Stringent Than State - Parson Running Ahead of Trump? - Pro-Washington PAC and more....
KC Relaxing Beyond State Standard
After teasing a Phase Two, Governor Mike Parson instead announced an extension of Phase One for another two weeks. Of course, Parson has made it clear recently that the order is just a suggestion. The state will take no action to enforce it.
This stance cedes leadership to the local municipalities.
Mayor Quinton Lucas seized the opening to release Kansas City’ new guidelines. They contain a provision which is actually less stringent than the statewide order. KC’s retail will now be able to open at 50% capacity. That’s higher than the 25% capacity in the state’s order.
Parson Running Ahead of Trump?
Yesterday a poll from We Ask America made the rounds of social media. See it here. Some observers – like the mighty Jason Rosenbaum – thought the poll result were questionable because it showed Mike Parson running ahead of Donald Trump in Missouri.
Looking ahead to November, Mike Parson has an early lead on his Democratic opponent. Parson leads his challenger, State Auditor Nicole Galloway, 47%-39% for an eight-point lead… In the presidential race, President Donald Trump holds a narrow lead over former Vice President Joe Biden. 48% of likely voters plan to vote for Trump, while Biden is getting 44%.
Axios on Tech Worker Diaspora
Axios sees the remote working trend started by the coronavirus as helping tech clusters in St. Louis and Kansas City. See it here.
The biggest U.S. tech hubs, which have enjoyed huge economic growth, are likely to start losing workers to a next tier of rising cities, thanks to the wave of remote work, Axios Cities editor Kim Hart writes.
Why it matters: With more people finding long-term flexibility to work from anywhere, they have less reason to live in the most expensive cities like New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Seattle… In 2017, 90% of the nation's tech-sector jobs were concentrated in the top five innovation cities — Boston, San Francisco, San Jose, Seattle and San Diego — per a Brookings Institution analysis…
[A] redistribution of sought-after workers beyond the biggest five to 10 cities will go a long way in lifting up regions that have been left behind. It could also help reverse a decade-long brain drain from heartland cities like Kansas City and St. Louis…
