MOScout Daily Update: Curfew Calms STL - Cole Starts Radio - Victory Beats King - MedEx Suit Dismissed - Zimmerman Owns the Left Lane and more...

Curfew Calms STL

It was a relatively calm night in St. Louis after Mayor Lyda Krewson imposed a 9PM curfew, and organizers of rallies called for a day off from protests.

·         Governor Mike Parson won accolades for meeting with black leadership in St. Louis.  See a tweet by Sen. Jamilah Nasheed here.

What It Means

There’s no indication that the latest example of police brutality or the subsequent civil unrest and riots have changed the fundamental political alignments in Missouri, or shifted the electorate.

Election Results

·         Ferguson, the site of great unrest six years ago, elected a black woman as mayor.  Ella Jones’ victory is a national story.  See the NYTimes article here.

·         Victory Enterprise was a consultant on Randy Feenstra’s win over right-wing lightning rod, 9-term congressman Steve King.  See Joe Lakin’s celebratory tweet here.

·         Axiom’s Aaron Baker was elected to the Atlanta school board, leading the field with 135 votes.

·         Rep. Jeff Coleman was re-elected to the Grain Valley School Board.

·         Former Rep. Ted Hoskins lost his bid for re-election of the City of Berkeley. Hoskins is currently fighting felony charges of voter fraud.

·         KC firefighters prevailed on a $315 million tax increase. See it here.

·         In fact, scores of local bond issues and tax increases won across the state.  It’s been the subject of some angst among the Senate Conservative Caucus.  But even in Sen. Bill Eigel’s St. Charles County, they were mostly likely to pass. See St. Chuck results here.

First in MOScout: Cole Starts Radio

David Cole, running in the Senate 29 Republican primary, is up with his first radio ad.  Listen to it here.

He calls himself a “pro-Trump, constitutional conservative.”  There are also a few veiled jabs at “politicians,” perhaps foreshadowing a line of attack on Rep. Mike Moon.  Moon is not your typical politician, so we’ll see if that sticks.

MedEx Suit Dismissed

A court dismissed the United for Missouri’s lawsuit arguing that the Medicaid expansion ballot question was unconstitutional.

MedEx press release: “We are pleased these frivolous lawsuits have been dismissed and Missourians will finally have an opportunity on August 4 to support Missouri’s economy by protecting thousands of frontline healthcare jobs at a time we need them most….”

They upload the court decision.  See it here.

No Nursing Home COVID Data in MO?

One reader noticed that this map from Axios on COVID death rates in nursing homes didn’t have any data from Missouri.

According to the underlying report (see it here), “Michigan, Missouri, and South Dakota do not break out deaths by residential categories.”

Amazon Preps Summer Sale

One more data point about getting Wayfair implemented in Missouri…

CNBC reports: Amazon has set a date for its  “Summer Sale” event that’s designed to provide a boost for sellers feeling the impacts of the coronavirus pandemic and the delay of the company’s annual Prime Day event.

·         Missouri collects sales tax from Amazon, but not from their third-party sellers.

Zimmerman Owns Left Lane

Jake Zimmerman has been consistently messaging about issues that are important to the Democratic base.  Here’s the latest…

Please plan to join Jake and Linda Locke as they answer your questions about Women's Health Care and the future of St. Louis County. The meeting will be hosted on Zoom at 7:00 PM on Thursday, June 4th.

Normally running to the base is a key to winning a primary.  But… the MOScout poll from the weekend calls into question how important ideology is to the voters in the race.  After a corrupt Steve Stenger and in middle of a pandemic, voters priorities seem to be different for this office.

Q4: When thinking about the next St. Louis County Executive, what is most important to you: their political positions, their managerial competence, or their personal integrity?

Political positions: 14%

Managerial competence: 42%

Personal integrity: 34%

Not sure: 10%

eMailbag on Hold Harmless Cuts

The waiving of the statute regarding hold harmless payments could be made even more interesting by the fact that the current Attorney General was the author of the legislation that created the statute that the Governor waived.

New Committees

Mike Lindley formed an exemption committee to run for House 145 as a Democrat.

Sean Smith formed a candidate committee (Sean Smith for Missouri) to run for House 35 as a Republican.

Bayer US LLC Missouri PAC was formed.  Its treasurer is Brian Branca.

Lobbyist Registrations

Steven Tilley and Thomas Robbins added Concierge Testing Solutions LLC.

Mark Rhoads deleted Missouri Rising, BioKyowa, and Appriss Safety.

Michael Winter deleted American Prearranged Services, Inc.
