MOScout Daily Update: The Next Special - Ad Watch - DougPAC Gets $100K - More Macons Coming? and more...

The Next Special Session?

Governor Mike Parson said at his recent briefing that a COVID liability special session wasn’t a given.  It would need to be worked out beforehand with the legislature.

But he did that there would be a supplemental budget special session coming.

Word is that the announcement will happen next week, with special being called for early October.

What It Means

It’s likely to be non-controversial spending authority dealing with items that could be appropriated correctly due to uncertainty with the federal packages.

Ad Watch

A couple new ads out…

·         The pro-Mike Parson PAC Uniting Missouri released an ad attacking Nicole Galloway’s ties to lobbyists – including her family.  See it here.

·         Jill Schupp latest ad hits Congresswoman Ann Wagner on healthcare votes.  See it here.

Not Just Haahr’s Revenge

One MOScouter writes: [Rob] Vescovo was just as involved in the decision [to spike the special session legislation]. It is smart politics for him… you don't usually want to be taken for granted if you are the incoming speaker.

Future Fall Headlines?

Missed this headline from Tuesday…  “Macon Schools respond to district-wide virus outbreak, 286 students quarantined”

See the KRCG report here.

We have double-digit numbers of students who have tested positive and 286 students district-wide have been quarantined. We have 15 staff members either positive, quarantined or being tested.

One reader thinks, “This is going to happen other places in the State…”

What It Means

I continue to think that COVID’s impact in the rural areas is one of the wildcards in this election cycle.

DougPAC Gets $100K

In the large contributions, DougPAC received a little over $100,000 from the Sheet Metal Workers Union.

DougPAC is supporting Democrat Doug Beck in Senate 1 where Sen. Scott Sifton is termed.  It’s one of three hotly contested state senate races this cycle.

What It Means

Republicans have traditionally had a financial advantage. But working in Beck’s favor are two incumbent senators in very competitive races.  Defending incumbents is usually a priority.  That means Beck’s opponent, David Lenihan, may have to depend more upon himself than the Republican Senate apparatus for resources.

Hancock Hires Another Reporter

Rebecca Rivas announced she’s joining the non-profit news service headed by Jason Hancock.  She joins Rudy Keller and Tessa Weinberg.  One media watcher says to “look for debut mid-October.”

St. Louis Public Radio Battles Racism Charges

St. Louis Public Radio has become embroiled in a debate over institutional racism in its newsroom.

Yesterday 21 staffers signed a “letter of no confidence” in the current investigation into the matter.  See it here.  Among the signees were political reporters Jaclyn Driscoll and the mighty Jason Rosenbaum.
