MOScout Daily Update: Schmitt and Hartzler Lead $$$ Chase - McCloskey Big CC Fees - Sifton and Kunce Burn Rates - TOP COH Committees and more...

More on Long Buzz

One MOScouter tips… At Bill White’s re-election kick off [a few weeks ago] Billy Long showed up and said he was going to run for US senate but that he “wasn’t announcing yet”.

July Quarter: US Senate

Attorney General Eric Schmitt and Congresswoman Vicky Hartzler led the field in fundraising while both Eric Greitens and Mark McCloskey’s numbers were uninspiring.

·         Schmitt raised $1.3M, spent about $200K, and has $1.1M on-hand with about $100K of outstanding debts.

·         Hartzler raised $1M, spent about $240K, and finished with $1.4M on-hand.

·         But Schmitt’s PAC also put up a big number, raising over $1.5M on minimal expenses.

McCloskey put up a good first quarter for a newcomer raising $544,948.  But expenses took their toll.  Credit card processing accounted for an amazing $217,920!  He only had $167,417 on-hand.

Likewise, Greitens raised $348K, but spent $323K and finished with only $134,551 on-hand.  Of course, his super PAC received a $2.5 million contribution.  That will support a TV ad campaign.  But his actual campaign is not attracting much support.  And one observer noted that most of his money came from out-of-state.

Waiting in the wings maybe…

Congressman Bill Long raised $200K and has $560K on-hand.

Congressman Jason Smith raised $540K and has $1.6M on-hand.

Congresswoman Ann Wagner raised $835K and has $1.2M on-hand.

Meanwhile

On the Democratic side, Lucas Kunce raised $629,342 for the quarter, but has a high burn rate, spending nearly $500K. He finished with $324,708 on-hand.  As if not to be outdone, Scott Sifton’s numbers and burn rate were worse.  He raised $200K, but spent $243,525, ending with $101,643 on-hand.  It looks like digital ads accounted for a large chunk of Kunce’s expenditures, while consultants ate a good amount of Sifton’s haul.

July Quarter: Coming GOP Senate Primaries

Obviously, we don’t have lines yet, but here’s where some folks are lining up – or may look to run depending how things shake out…

Senate 2 – St. Charles, Bob Onder termed

Justin Hill raised $100 and has $6,035 on-hand.

Nick Schroer raised $10,431 and has $49,438 on-hand.

John Wiemann raised $3,500 and has $102,399

·         Where This Stands: All three are solidly conservative, so a great deal will depend on how this district is actually drawn, However, Hill’s lackluster fundraising puts him at a disadvantage – all other things equal.

Senate 22 – Jefferson County, Paul Wieland termed

Mary Elizabeth Coleman raised $19,650, and has $54,820 on-hand.

Becky Ruth raised $3,950 and has $41,067 on-hand.

Dan Shaul raised $7,900 and has $17,675 on-hand

·         Where This Stands: Another situation where the district line will be a big factor and who is ultimately the best fit for the district.  In the meantime, the best thing to do is raise money so you’re ready for the lines when they come.

Senate 26 – Franklin County, Dave Schatz termed

Dottie Bailey raised 605 and has $800 on-hand.

Ben Brown raised $17,740 and has $37,681 on-hand.

Aaron Griesheimer raised $3,525 and has $50,757 on-hand.

Shane Roden raised $100 and has $5,249 on-hand.

·         Where This Stands: Brown has a nice outsider profile.  His top campaign talking point is about the overreaching COVID reaction from government.  It felt like that might be dated by the time 2022 comes around, but maybe not. Griesheimer would probably have the “establishment” lane all to himself, should he choose to run.

Senate 10 – Callaway County, Jeanie Riddle termed

Travis Fitzwater raised $4,000, and has $50,747 on-hand.

Bryan Spencer raised $520 and has $137,462 on-hand.

Jeff Porter raised $2,650 and has $21,169 on-hand.

·         Where This Stands: Spencer is trying to do something tough: be out of office for a few years and make a comeback.  His high cash on-hand is a result of loaning himself $100K earlier this year.  I think Fitzwater is nicely positioned right now.
