MOScout Daily Update: Brown terminates Registration - 100 PAC Scorecard on GOP Sens - Shannon Appt to Lincoln Curators - Brunner Event and more...

Brown Terminates Registration

Travis Brown has terminated his lobbyist registration in Missouri.  It’s the end – or perhaps a pause – of a long lobbying career in Missouri.

Brown gained prominence in 2007 when he formed Pelopidas and repped mega-donor Rex Sinquefield.  Through a series of initiatives and large contributions Sinquefield became a household name in Missouri politics. Brown was viewed as the gatekeeper for access to Sinquefield.

When they split in 2020, Brown joined Strategic Capitol Consulting.

According to LinkedIn, Brown has been executive vice-president of Alexis Bio for the past year or so.

100 PAC’s Scorecard

Jim Lembke, on Facebook, shows the 100 PAC’s scorecard on how Republican senators voted last session.  See it here.

·         This will likely infuriate some of the Regular Republicans confirming their suspicious that several amendments were offered during session as fodder for political ammunition.

Carter Continues to Spend in Senate 10

The $500,000 infusion of cash from Mike Carter into his state senate campaign was apparently no bluff.  He continues to spend money.  Team Carter reports that they have…

·         18 billboards up on highways 70, 54, 40/64, and 47.

·         Several iterations of TV commercials running across the district.

·         Several iterations of radio ads running across the district.

·         Back page or centerfold in publications in Pike, Lincoln, Callaway, and Montgomery counties.

·         Spent tens of thousands on digital social media placement.

·         A new volunteer coordinator, Erica Stewart.

Brunner Event Draws JCity Crowd

Big turnout for the J.B. Brunner funder hosted by David Jackson of Gamble & Schlemeier…

Said one lobbyist who attended: “Haven't ever seen that many influentials at an event for a first-time state rep candidate.”

That was due in part to his father’s connections – consultant Gregg Keller, hotelier Tim Drury, and others who had supported John Brunner’s campaigns showed up.

But there was also a strong contingent of politicos and lobbyists from across the state, including special guest Eric Schmitt, Sen. Andrew Koenig, House Budget Chair Cody Smith, Reps. Scott Cupps and Bruce DeGroot, Nexus Group’s Brian Grace and Kate Casas, Catalyst’s Becky Lohmann, and many more.

Shannon Appointed to Lincoln Curators

Governor Mike Parson appointed Ameren’s Tina Shannon to the Lincoln University Board of Curators.  Other appointments made…

·         William (Bill) Lovegreen, of Kirksville, was appointed to the Truman State University Board of Governors.

·         Wendi McGhee, of Clinton, was appointed as the Henry County Circuit Clerk.

·         Dwight McNiel, of Ozark, was appointed to the Board of Private Investigator and Private Fire Investigator Examiners.

·         Gary Newman, of Buckner, was appointed to the Amusement Ride Safety Board.

·         Mark Ruether, of Jefferson City, was appointed as the Cole County Auditor.

·         Derek Winters, of St. Louis, was appointed to the St. Louis City Board of Election Commissioners.

 Profiles

·         St. Louis Magazine has a profile on Attorney General Eric Schmitt and his bid to be the next US Senator.  See it hereOnly Republicans can win statewide elections in Missouri anymore, the thinking goes, so for Schmitt to do so, he must first win over a plurality of GOP primary voters, and those voters are disgusted, afraid, and spoiling for a fight.

·         Puck profiles Jeff RoeSee it hereMcCormick masterfully utilized Jeff Roe’s playbook—walking the line between blazing Trumpiness and establishment-friendly country club Republicanism—to come within millimeters of victory.

Boone County Tragedy

Just a sad story in Columbia, with apparent suicide of the veteran Boone County Prosecuting Attorney Dan Knight, a Democrat. Noted from one Mid-Mo TV report: “Chief Jones said Crime Scene Investigators continued to work on the case. Boone County medical examiners will perform an autopsy Tuesday. Former Cole County Prosecutor Bill Tackett said Assistant Boone County Prosecutor Nick Komoroski was sworn in as the Interim Prosecutor on Saturday. Tackett said Komoroski’s appointment was no surprise. Tackett said the situation was political because Governor Mike Parson has the option of appointing a Republican replacement for Komoroski.”

·         One BoCo MOScouter: “Dan Knight was a Democrat, but you wouldn’t know it by his low-key demeanor. He was no backslapper. Some local prosecutors dream of rising to AG, Governor, Senator, Congress, judgeships. Dan was content being a prosecutor. But with the massive workloads of prosecutors generally, and in booming Boone County with three+ colleges especially, it’s a tough, thankless and exhausting job. Son of a prominent Columbia attorney, Dan Knight grew up around lawyers and courtrooms. He had been associated with the prosecutors office nearly 30 years. Dan announced he wasn’t running for re-election this year, and that he was considering running for a local judgeship. Recently, friends said Dan had apparently been having second thoughts about stepping away from being prosecutor. Filing closed in March, so, these friends said, Dan was considering running as an independent.”

Correction

My apologies for naming the wrong automaker that was expanding their Claycomo plant.  It is, of course, Ford that responsible for the new 1,100 jobs!

eMailbag on Guns in Poll

·         Because it polls well, pay no attention that children were brutally murdered in a manner that is the stuff of nightmares in their classroom and adults buying groceries and doctors in their own hospital…ban assault rifles or never look in the mirror again because the second amendment does not endorse brutal carnage.

·         I really anticipated the response to the gun laws poll question to move (toward “Too loose”) a bit, if only for a short duration. Guess not.

Lobbyists Registrations

Richard McIntosh and Bill Stouffer deleted National Steamboat Museum.

Travis Brown terminated his registration as a lobbyist.

Tami Holliday terminated her registration as a lobbyist.
