MOScout Daily Update: Roorda Ad - Hardin Threatened - Brattin Gets NRA - More Senate Floor Talk - Soupy's $1M - New Valentine Endorsements and more...

First in MOScout: Roorda Ad

Jeff Roorda is now on the air in Senate 22.  It’s a law-and-order ad entitled “Protect and Serve” referencing his time as Jefferson County police officer, and his time as a state representative (though of course not mentioning that he was elected as a Democrat).

See it here.

“I’m running for state senate to stand up to the radical left and protect our values.”

Other Ads

·         Schmitt Swings for Cards Fans – Eric Schmitt’s latest ad has him taking some batting practice while hitting the hot buttons (election fraud, CRT, trans-athletes).  See it here“As a sixth generation Missourian, it’s always been about God, family, country, and the Cardinals for me.”

·         Wasson Touts Sheriff Support – Jay Wasson, running in CD-7, has a new ad proclaiming the support he has from county sheriffs. See it here. “I’ve had it. Let’s secure the border and keep our families safe.”

CD-4: Soupy Antes $1M

According to his latest FEC filing Jim “Soupy” Campbell did indeed, as rumored, put $1 million of his own money into his CD-4 campaign.  That will presumably propel him to the top of the cash on-hand list for this quarter.  But is it enough this late in the race to make him a contender?

NRA Endorsements

See the NRA primary endorsements here.  A few that stick out to me…

·         Rick Brattin pulled down the sole NRA endorsement in CD-4.

·         Rep. Curtis Trent in Senate 20, and Rep. Nate Tate in Senate 26 who won endorsements among the open seat Senate primaries.

·         Surprised to see that Jeff Roorda’s rating from NRA was a “B,” but I suppose that’s because of votes from his House Dem days.

·         The only non-incumbent House candidate to nab an NRA endorsement is Jamie Ray Gragg in House 140.  See his website here.

Hummel, James, McKennas for Valentine

Dem US Senate candidate Trudy Busch Valentine continues to add to her endorsement list.  Among the latest names… Jake Hummel, Sly James, Bill McKenna, and Ryan McKenna.

See the whole list here.

More Senate Floor Leader Talk

The Senate Floor Leader race is truly fluid…

·         One lobbyist tips: You forgot that Andrew Koenig is running for floor leader. I had a senator tell me recently that he is the only one who has traveled to them to ask for their vote. It seems that this race isn’t really going to start until after the primaries.

·         Also, the talk around Sen. Tony Luetkemeyer seems to have faded.  Most folks believe Luetkemeyer has his sights set on running for Attorney General down the road.  And although some consider the leader position as a feather in one’s cap, it’s more seen as a complicating factor in one’s political calculations.

House 106: Hardin Threatened

I wrote yesterday about St. Charles being a hotbed of political activity this cycle.  But yikers! Maybe too hot.

Buddy Hardin, running in four-way Republican primary in Tom Hannegan’s old district in House 106, had a scary incident in at his home.  A man who didn’t like his literature came to confront him.  Hardin wasn’t home.  His wife answered the door, and the man allegedly issued threats.

See the police report here.

Hall stated Wakeman yelled at her “I hope you get shot” and proceeded to yell that he hopes her husband and their grandchildren get shot…

College Brain Drain?

Intelligent.com says that changes in a state’s abortion law could have a big impact on their colleges’ enrollments.  See it here.

·         Twenty percent of students in states where abortion is currently or soon-to-be illegal, which includes West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Iowa, Missouri, North Dakota, South Dakota, Oklahoma, Texas, Wyoming and Utah, say they’re ‘definitely’ transferring to a different school in a state where abortion is still legal.

·         In a nod to how politicized the issue of reproductive rights has become, a student’s political affiliation, not their gender or personal views on abortion, appears most likely to inform their reaction to abortion bans in the state where they’re attending college. Twenty-seven percent of students who identify as Democrats are definitely transferring, while 28% are considering it.

DoorDash Up Lobbying

Politico reports that DoorDash “has created its own political action committee, moving to expand its already growing Washington influence presence… The delivery and takeout company brought on its first federally registered lobbyists in 2020 and has quickly grown its D.C. coterie of lobbying firms. Its influence team now counts a number of big K Street shops among its ranks, including Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld and Cassidy & Associates. DoorDash spent $615,000 on lobbying in the first quarter of 2022 alone, targeting, among other issues, matters around the gig economy…”

·         Here in Missouri, DoorDash is repped by Nexus Group.
