MOScout Daily Update: Ham Breakfast Recap - Gov Argues for Line Item Vetoes - Lindell Hits Schoeller and more...
Quick Friday update…
Governor’s Ham Breakfast Rundown
· The sold-out ham breakfast made it clear Governor Mike Parson is still the undisputed king of the state fair and of Missouri’s ag community.
· Notably present: Both US Senators, all three GOP candidates for governor, AG Andrew Bailey, Treasurer Vivek Malek, Sens. Holly Thompson Rehder and Denny Hoskins, Rep. Cody Smith, Shane Schoeller, and multiple members of the GOP Senate and House caucuses.
· Most surprising attendees: Statewide DEM candidates Wesley Bell, Lucas Kunce, and Sarah Unsicker.
· Not seen: Will Scharf, Dean Plocher (MO House GOP booked their annual Summer Caucus in Branson at the exact same time as the ham breakfast), and Andrew Koenig.
Pre-Veto Session Positioning
Post-Dispatch’s Kurt Erickson reports on the governor’s office “pushing back” against legislators eyeing some of Governor Mike Parson’s line-item vetoes in the budget.
Parson cut hundreds of millions of dollars from the state budget, much of it earmarked projects advocated by individual legislators.
When the governor made his vetoes, he was clear it was due to overall fiscal concerns… “The Missouri General Assembly passed legislation which is estimated to result in a loss of ongoing general revenues exceeding $300 million and increasing ongoing general revenue expenditures by over $200 million. In addition, Missouri has consistently maintained a AAA bond rating and we will ensure a balanced budget for years to come. In light of all these factors, I have vetoed this provision in an effort to help ensure the financial stability of Missouri beyond my Administration and the current General Assembly…”
Getting Passed Around: Roe Notes
New York Times reports on debate strategy for Ron DeSantis prepared by Axiom Strategies. Read it here.
“1. Attack Joe Biden and the media 3-5 times. 2. State GRD’s positive vision 2-3 times. 3. Hammer Vivek Ramaswamy in a response. 4. Defend Donald Trump in absentia in response to a Chris Christie attack.”
The documents were posted this week on the website of Axiom Strategies, the company owned by Jeff Roe, the chief strategist of Mr. DeSantis’s super PAC, Never Back Down.
Lindell’s Election Summit
Springfield News-Leader’s Kelley Dereuck reports on Mike Lindell’s “summit” on election fraud in Springfield. It appears Sen. Bill Eigel was the only gubernatorial candidate to attend.
From the article…
· Lindell specifically called out Greene County Clerk Shane Schoeller by name for filing a lawsuit against Laurie Huddleston, one of many people overloading his office with requests for cast vote records. Schoeller is one of the candidates for Missouri Secretary of State in 2024. “A nice lady went to get the cast vote records, and they charged her,” Lindell said. “That guy pressed charges. A guy named Shane Schoeller or something, and now he’s running for Secretary of State?”
· If he had his way, Lindell would like to see all the voting machines melted down and turned into prison bars… In lieu of voting machines, Lindell and other speakers at the event want to bring back hand-counted paper ballots across the country.
eMailbag: Don’t Count Burger Out
With regard to possible Senate 27 candidates to replace Sen. Holly Thompson Rehder, one lobbyist texted me… “I’m hearing that Jamie Burger has not ruled out running for senate…”
