MOScout Daily Update: Huge A3 Ad Buys - New Sports Betting Ad - VFW Raid? - Police Takeover PAC - Childcare Finger-pointing and more…
Huge Pro-A3 Buy
Missourians for Constitutional Freedom, the campaign committee for Amendment 3 (reproductive rights), has ordered millions of dollars of television advertisements.
According to public FCC filings, the statewide ad blitz will begin in mid-October and become a ubiquitous presence in the final weeks before Election Day.
Sports Betting Campaign Unveils First Ad
Here’s the first ad from Winning for Missouri Education, the campaign committee for the pro-sports betting constitutional amendment.
As the name of their committee implies, it appears they’ll be focusing on the benefits of tax revenue from sports betting going to education.
As a mom and former first grade teacher I care deeply about education. That’s why I’m voting for Amendment 2. Legalizing sports betting will generate tens of millions of dollars every year for our classrooms, helping increase teacher pay. Amendment 2 has a constitutional guarantee that ensures the money from sports betting goes to our schools. No more wasted dollars. Take it from this mom and former teacher Amendment 2 is the right thing to do.
VFW Hemp Raid?
On Facebook (see it here) a VFW Post says it was “raided.”
The MO Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS) raided our VFW Post on the morning of 9/11 in search of "adulterated" beverages that violate Gov. Parson's hemp-adulturated food product "embargo" which, as he says is intended to "protect children". To be clear, VFW Post 2661 does NOT sell adulterated products; all beverages are in compliance with Revised MO Statute 196.070…
While we normally appreciate visitors to our beautiful Post home, we are not sure that raiding a Veterans of Foreign Wars Post on September 11th immediately after lowering our flag to half-staff in remembrance of the thousands of lives taken from us 23 years ago today and for the 50,000 + Service Members and DoD Civilians that have lost their lives fighting in the wars that stemmed from that horrible day was the best or most respectful time to do it. We also are curious how raiding a VFW canteen for these products achieves the Governor's "goal" of protecting children.
STL Police Takeover Contributions
In the large contributions today, there are significant donations from Missouri Law Enforcement for Good Government PAC to the campaign committees for Senate Republicans ($100K), and House Republicans ($50K). They previously gave $200K to PACs supporting Mike Kehoe for governor as well as contributions to the PACs of Sen. Leader Cindy O’Laughlin and Speaker-elect Jon Patterson.
All signs point to a renewed push on the PACs agenda item – state takeover of the St. Louis police – in the upcoming session.
· Like last year, the St. Louis Mayor’s Office will make the defeat of this proposal one of their top priorities. But if the Republican supermajority looks to push the measure through, one point for possible compromise to lessen the blow will be negotiating the composition of the new police board. Last year’s bill had the governor appointing four members.
Child Care Subsidy Finger-Pointing
At yesterday’s House Budget hearing on the child care subsidy disaster, Rep. Deb Lavender dug into the contract approval process.
While World Wide Technology has been mentioned before as the vendor, Office of Childhood Director Pam Thomas said that MTX Group, a partner in the contract, was “doing most of the work on the project.”
· MTX, by the way, appears to be gearing up for the possible blowback. In July, they hired Jay Hahn to be their Jefferson City lobbyist, and then in late August sent $50,000 to the Hahn DeBoef PAC.
