O’Laughlin Calls for Firing of Childhood Director

Yesterday on Facebook, Senate Leader Cindy O’Laughlin called for the Director of the Office of Childhood to be fired…

In the real world when a disaster occurs it is all hands on deck to resolve it. This is because it matters! It matters to the people you work with, live with and sometimes to broader society as well.

Today as I continue searching for solutions to the statewide disaster of daycare I find out the Director of the Office of Childhood is where…….?

In Las Vegas at a Hunt Institute meeting. I won’t go into details on the Hunt Institute except to say I don’t go to the meetings they have in JEFF CITY because all we do is talk over the problems. WE ALL KNOW THE PROBLEMS IT IS SOLUTIONS WE ARE AFTER.

The Director should be fired. Today.

We don’t need bureaucrats who spend their time attending meetings all over the country while their own department is burning to the ground.  Travel should be banned until our departments are being run effectively. And that day is not today.

We have a disaster which does involve children, foster children and other vulnerable populations. You can argue that the state should not be involved at all and I understand there are people that think that way. But I would argue a commitment has been made and at the least if a commitment is made it should be followed up on.

I am calling the Governor’s office today.  This is unacceptable.

Judge Rewrites Ashcroft Ballot Language

A judge rewrote the fair ballot language for Amendment 3, the pro-choice constitutional amendment.  Judge Cotton Walker concluded that Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft’s language was “unfair, insufficient, inaccurate and misleading.”  “Intentional or not, the Secretary’s language sows voter confusion about the effect of the measure.”  See the ruling here.

What It Means

Amendment 3 continues to look like it will pass in November.  This is the latest in a number of good developments.  They’ve seen OK polling, exceptional fundraising, and now more balanced ballot language.

Jeff City Drama

News Tribune reports on drama on the Jefferson City Council.   Toward the end of the administration committee's monthly meeting, Ward 3 Councilman Scott Spencer said he was a victim of a hostile work environment and inappropriate comments from Ward 2 Councilman Aaron Mealy

·       Spencer said there were a "couple of occasions" in public in which Mealy "used vulgarity to question (Spencer's) character." Spencer said Mealy had called him "an effing liar" and said "I don't want to be your effing friend" and accused Mealy of trying to bully and intimidate him "using his physical size over" Spencer…

·       Mealy, who was not present during the administration committee meeting, denied such allegations in a phone interview afterward…

·       [Mayor Ron] Fitzwater said he hopes Mealy and Spencer are able to resolve their differences in a professional manner. He said he knew they had been "having some squabbles…"
