MOScout Daily Update: Waiting on Kehoe - Law’s Path in St. Charles - STL Sheriff Good News/Bad News Day - Capitol Gladiator and more…
I’ll be off this weekend for Labor Day. But… if – as folks expect – we get a special session declaration from Governor Mike Kehoe later today, I’ll send a quick special update with those details.
And now your quick Friday update…
Exclusive: St. Charles Polling Memo
A memo circulating from supporters of Jason Law shows his path in the St. Charles County Executive race.
First, a few disclaimers: it’s a small sample poll (300 people); and second it was commissioned by law enforcement groups backing Law.
Eigel’s support is shallow. As anticipated, Eigel is the best-known candidate (87% total name ID) and his name ID advantage propels him into an early lead on the ballot. But his support is paper thin. We asked voters, “which one of the following statements is closer to their view: I like Bill Eigel and will definitely vote for him, I like Bill Eigel but I am open to voting for another candidate …or … I dislike Bill Eigel and will not vote for him?.” A wide majority indicated they dislike Eigel and would vote for another candidate (13%) or would be open to supporting another candidate (43%) – including 62% of Eigel’s initial voters.
2. Jason Law’s message is compelling and changes the dynamics of the race. We gave poll respondents a brief statement outlining Jason’s law enforcement experience and his record of cutting taxes and reducing crime as Lake Saint Louis Mayor. Fully, 76% of Republicans said they would be “more likely” to vote for Law after hearing/reading the statement. Law cuts Eigel’s lead down to ten points, 24% Law – 34% Eigel, on the informed ballot after respondents read/heard just ONE brief statement about Law - underscoring Eigel’s shallow political support.
What It Means
The St. Charles County Executive race is shaping up to be one of the hottest local government races in the state next year. In part that’s because lightning rod Bill Eigel is on the ballot. But it’s also because of St. Charles’ growing economic and political clout.
· With its large pool of Republican voters, St. Charles could be provide a platform for a future statewide or congressional race.
Montgomery Indicted
St. Louis City Sheriff Alfred Montgomery was indicted yesterday for his role in the handcuffing of the city’s deputy jail commissioner.
But it wasn’t all bad news for Montgomery yesterday. Attorney General Andrew Bailey dropped the most serious charge against Montgomery – that he had violated nepotism provisions. That would have clearly led to Montgomery’s ouster. The Post-Dispatch reported that DNA testing definitively proved the allegation was untrue – an embarrassing blooper from the Ag’s office as they apparently made the charge with little actual evidence.

Firefighters Win As Steak Fight Breaks Out
The Phelps County Focus reports that Cattlemen in Phelps and Dent counties have responded to PETA’s “vegan steaks” gift to the Doolittle Rural Fire Protection District with real beef.
Here’s what Mike Deering, executive director of the Missouri Cattlemen’s Association, sent to Fire Chief Brandon Williams…
“We caught wind that PETA - an animal rights extremist organization - is sending you a box of fake meat from Slovenia-based Juicy Marbles. We believe you deserve better. We believe hardworking men and women like the real thing. We believe you prefer American as well. Nothing against Slovenia but give me a break. What is even in that stuff?..
Not only are we going to provide you with 30 beef ribeyes from Hometown Processing in Salem, but the Dent Phelps Cattlemen are also going to grill them for you while you relax after a hard day serving your community. Get in touch with me to set up a day and time that works for you and your crew…”
Moehlman to Bar
News Tribune reports that Jefferson City attorney Ryan Moehlman “is resigning from the Jefferson City law department for a job at the Missouri Bar Association.”

New Offering
Next month, I’m starting something new: “What It Means STL.” I’m planning on doing “four-ish” posts a week. They will be brief, single-topic posts – focused on St. Louis. It will be some politics, but also wider observations.
This is your invitation to subscribe.
It’ll be much cheaper than MOScout… $10/month, and until this weekend (Sunday or Monday), you can lock in the special $5/month rate (50% off). This pre-launch sale is especially for MOScouters because there will be, from time to time, some overlap in material.
I will change the price sometime this weekend. And then that’s that.
