Latest Beers and Budget

The latest Beers and Budget episode is up (see it here).  It features Andy Foley and Erin Schrimpf talking about the budget requests from various departments of state government.

A few interesting exchanges…

·       Not many cuts in department requests – Foley: I didn't see a ton of reductions...  I thought we'd see a little bit more cutting [from the department requests]… it's going to leave it a lot up to the governor and the legislature.

·       SBOE not asking for statutory amount – Schrimpf: I think there was so much disappointment in the [State Board of Education]. It's like we're not even at Step One of the process and you've already given away…I would have preferred them to ask for the full amount, right?

·       Concern about fiscal notes - Schrimpf: Do you think more of those discussions [concern about fiscal notes] start taking place on the floor? More colleagues start standing up and saying, ‘I just got this bill. I don't trust this fiscal note’ or… Can we look at the budget we have this year?  Foley: Most definitely.

Senate 8: JP’s Money Mountain Defied

A year ago, I would have expected that Speaker Jon Patterson’s huge campaign war-chest would dwarf any effort by Rep. Keri Ingle and her Democratic allies.  However, the amount of money that’s been poured into the district has been massive.  And there’s been more outside money on Ingle’s behalf than Patterson’s.  That’s meant that his once huge financial lead wasn’t able to drown her out.

Pro Patterson = $498,046

·       Asclepius PAC $100,000

·       Legio XIII PAC $18,290

·       Missouri Alliance: $379,756

Pro Ingle = $475,633

·       Missouri Voter Project $6,249

·       Promo PAC $2,400

·       MO State Teachers Assoc $960

·       Missouri National Org for Women PAC $80

Anti Ingle = $989,890

Anti Patterson = $1,850,569

·       Senate Democratic Campaign Committee $1,144,553

·       Will of the People $663,064

·       Access MO $23,379

·       Protect Majority Rule Missouri $13,321

House Updates

·       House 10 – HRCC’s attack on LaTonya Williams: LaTonya Williams was fired.  If she can’t manage a daycare, how will she manage your tax dollars?

·       House 12 – Tracey Steele touts the endorsement of the KC Chamber of Commerce PAC.

·       House 30 – HRCC hits Democrat Kevin Grover with a combo affordability / data center attack.  See it here.  Your electric bill went up. Your property tax bill did too. Now Kevin Grover wants to bring in AI data centers, the largest electricity users this country has ever seen.  Their power demand raises what you pay. Their tax breaks shift the burden onto your home.

·       House 34 – Republican Sean Smith isn’t letting a dental procedure keep him from campaigning.  See it here.

·       House 94 – Republican Maryellen Murphy is leaning into the Murphy brand by posting a legislative award won by her husband, Rep. Jim Murphy.

·       House 100 – Dems are portraying votes for Amendment 5 as votes for “a tax on everything we buy.”  Here’s Will of the People’s ad on Phil Oehlerking using it.  Meanwhile, HRCC’s “There’s Something About Mary” ad calls Mary Ann Perkins “anti-religion, anti-marriage, and pro-higher property taxes.”

·       House 101 – Rep. Ben Keathley is spending a lot of time talking about curb bump outs on a local road.  Why?  Tough year for Republicans on issues like the economy and taxes.

·       House 106 – Former Rep. Chris Sander, who lost in the Republican primary to Wilson says, “I was told by Travis Wilson I should no longer run as a Republican, so I am now a Democrat. I am contributing to Democrat campaigns and helping democrats…”

·       House 110 – Republican Niles Stephens isn’t running to the middle.  His recent Facebook post: In liberal run cities, they will tear down statues of the Founding Fathers and replace them with Idols for Abortion. No thanks on this type of Blue Wave "arts and culture" coming to Wildwood and Clarkson Valley. Vote Accordingly!

·       House 133 – PROMO hits Republican Jerry Angelo for embracing an ultra-conservative view of marriage. “Women need to respect their husbands without condition.”
