8Day Reports
8 Day Before the Primary campaign finance reports were filed yesterday. Here are a few items that popped out to me…
· Auditor Nicole Galloway continues her fundraising haul. Her team had said that they saw a spike in online donations after Governor Mike Parson’s comments about school children and coronavirus. It showed. She raised $425K during first three weeks of July, compared to the incumbent who collected $115K.
· In Senate 23, Eric Wulff’s primary challenge to Sen. Bill Eigel has been waged largely by third-party committees. Wulff's candidate committee raised $6,475 during July bringing his total amount raised to $11,500.
· In Senate 29, Rep. Mike Moon had a good quarter for him. He raised $42,635. What’s interesting though is that it was fueled by trial attorney money (Langdon and Emision; Dollar, Burns, and Becker; MO Republican Attorneys for Civil Justice; Presley and Presley; Gorny Law Firm; O’Brien Law Firm…) One theory is that the trial attorneys have a secret pact with the Conservative Caucus. But I think a more salient theory is that they view Moon’s entrance into the Senate as a catalyst for more dissension and chaos. More chaos = less legislation – less tort reform.
Special Session
The Senate Transportation and Public Safety Committee will hold a hearing on SB 1 which contains Governor Mike Parson’s package to address violent crime.
Greitens Still Running FB Ads
One MOScouter sent me this screenshot of an Eric Greitens ad running in his Facebook feed with the general question “WTF?”
It’s a good question.
Most folks think that Greitens still had political ambitions and is plotting a move to run for U.S. Senate in 2022 under the assumption that Senator Roy Blunt may retire – or be vulnerable to a right-side primary challenge.
But Greitens needs to rehabilitate his name and keep himself in the conversation. So he’s using the remaining war-chest from his gubby days to do that.
It probably doesn’t hurt as a side benefit that his ads undermine the conservative cred of Governor Mike Parson who watched stoically from the lieutenant governor’s office while Greitens was battered by waves of scandals and investigations. This is Greitens’ little revenge: to call Parson a coward on Fox and then run ads about it.
St. Charles Asks Businesses to Require Masks
St. Charles County which has eschewed a mask mandate is asking businesses to require them. See it here.
County Executive Steve Ehlmann says, “We are encouraging businesses to please require anyone who enters their place of business to wear a mask. Most national chains have done this already. Nevertheless, we believe that each businessperson, after considering their responsibility to their customers, should have the freedom to make the decision. And when they make that decision, they need to be aware of the challenges the county is facing.”
St. Charles County is not immune to the increase in COVID-19 sweeping the nation. Across the United States, cities, counties and states are asking for or mandating the use of masks...
“The move to ‘mandatory masks’ is incredibly difficult to monitor and enforce,” says Saint Charles Mayor Dan Borgmeyer. “But, businesses like Walmart, Schnucks, Dierbergs, CVS and others mandating masks makes the effort 100 percent enforceable. We believe the business community can make a very strong and positive statement by leading on this effort to help flatten the curve of cases in the county…
