MOScout Daily Update: Economy Vs Abortion - $500K into Legal MO Campaign - Alford as Anchor Bully and more...
Schmitt Closing Argument: The Economy, Stupid
In Eric Schmitt’s latest ad he casts the election in economic terms: “More jobs and lowers taxes or bigger government and higher inflation. That’s Missouri’s choice this year.” See the ad here.
Nicolas Florko writes about the race and why abortion hasn’t gained more traction as an issue. Read it here.
· If any Senate race should be a referendum on abortion access it’s the one in Missouri…
· But getting elected on a pro-abortion rights platform isn’t easy in Missouri, even if most people in the state are privately with you…
· Even among supporters, candidates like Valentine ease into the issue. “I know sometimes this first issue is hard for people to hear and talk about, but we have to talk about it,” Valentine said to a group of supporters at a Kansas City meet-and-greet last week. The one-sided race in Missouri also demonstrates that abortion alone may not be enough to sway voters in America’s heartland, where getting elected to statewide office necessitates winning over Republicans who may privately oppose abortion bans but are more motivated by other issues, like rising inflation.

Following yesterday’s large pile of checks into the Legal Missouri 2022, today brings yet another batch... $500K more! That brings the two-day total new contributions to this campaign committee to $650K.
· The committee has now raised over $7.6 million.

Rumorville: Rizzo to Sports Authority?
One MOScouter tells me they think Sen. John Rizzo’s sending $200K to help candidates this cycle may be a bit easier because he’s plotted out his future… they see him winning an appointment to the Jackson County Sports Authority Complex. We’ll see…
KCStar: Alford As Anchor
Kansas City Star reports on Mark Alford’s time as a TV anchor. Read it here.
· The Star spoke with seven former Fox 4 colleagues of Alford, including four who described the anchor as toxic and bullying. One praised him, however, saying he was a positive force in the newsroom.
· Nearly every alleged incident of bullying conduct described by the former colleagues involved either demeaning remarks directed at lower-ranking employees or an outburst following a mistake of some kind. One former colleague said Alford was the most difficult person she had ever worked with in television.
ROMO (Reminder of the Obvious): CD-4 went for Donald Trump by 38 points. An article by the mainstream media reporting that he was a bully will have zero (0) impact on his path to DC.
Derges Sentencing
Post-Dispatch reports that the sentencing date for former Rep. Tricia Derges has been set for February.
· Derges could face up to 20 years in federal prison without parole on each of the 10 wire fraud counts and on each of the 10 drug distribution counts, and a sentence of up to five years in federal prison without parole on each of the two false statements counts…
