MOIndy on Post-Roe Pro-Life Legislation

Missouri Independent’s Tessa Weinberg get quotes from some legislators about the possibility that the General Assembly would outlaw some contraceptives if Roe v Wade is overturned.  Read it here.

·         “There are some that I think are okay and some that I don’t believe in,” state Sen. Denny Hoskins, R-Warrensburg, said of contraceptives, “especially the morning after pill and things that come after conception. So I think anything’s on the table.”

·         “I think we’ll have to cross that bridge when we get there,” said Sen. Elaine Gannon, R-De Soto. “I support pro-life. I’ve always been pro-life. I’ll never change my position on that.”

·         Geography plays a key role here. Riley can secure SWMO and Springfield is a natural fundraising base.

·         I can think of so many good women reps who haven't gone for House leadership. Jeannie Riddle, Shelly Keaney, Anne Zerr...

·         I have a 50/50 on Hardwick and Riley. Gregory would be in the mix if I didn’t expect him to be in the Senate.

·         Kurtis Gregory hands down. He will be governor one day

·         I’m going with Alex Riley. But as a warning for Alex, my pick for best incoming freshman of this class was Tricia Derges. So I may not be the best predictor of House talent.

·         [Gregory’s] got the presence it takes and is being intentional about relationships.

·         Travis Smith is too nice. I can see him being one of the most beloved Rules chairmen in history maybe. But Speaker requires dirty work.

·         This is a pretty big field and you have some good folks on the list. Alex because he is intelligent and thoughtful, but can also have a foot in the conservative and moderate camp without pissing everyone off.

·         Alex Riley is a workhorse not a show horse, they win these races.

·         If [Riley] wants it he makes the most sense. Best temperament and good at relationships.

Who Won the Week?

Dan Shaul – Watched the governor sign the map he labored over, and also won some social media love from Trump Administration alum Hogan Gidley.

Amy Collignon Gunn – Appointed Chair of the Merit Selection Panel for the appointment of two United States Magistrate Judges.

Jesus Osete – Jay Ashcroft’s new General Counsel.  One politico calls it “a great pickup for Ashcroft… Jesus is one of the best lawyers in government service in the state, and a true rising star. Has argued before the US Supreme Court and isn’t even 32 yet.”

Joe Palm – Appointed by President Joe Biden to be the Department of Health and Human Services Regional Director for Region 7 (Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, and Nebraska).

Sam Newton – Engaged this week to lobbyist Kaycee Nail.

eMailbag More Onder-Schatz

·         There is no way losing the chair costs Bob’s staff money.  You just flex the mail budget to personal service and there is more than enough to go around… He also only has one staffer listed on his website so it’s really hard to believe…

·         Your reader surmises that someone ten years from now is going to ponder challenging the ruling of the chair, but will think twice after reading a journal from a decade ago about how a termed-out senator lost his chairmanship AFTER session was over? I respectfully disagree. Schatz doing this is like yelling “yea, you better run!” after the fight is already over and he lost. This looks extremely weak.
