MOScout Daily Update: Burlison Ad - More Herzog $$$ - House Primary Guide: STL Exurbs - Anti-Walton PAC - NYTimes on MO Abortion Politics and more...

Burlison on the Air

Sen. Eric Burlison, running in CD-7, will release his first television ad today.  It’s a fun playful ad featuring his daughters who call him a nerd for teaching the evils of inflation and name-dropping Ted Cruz around the house.

See the ad here.

I think it works.  Burlison comes off as a likeable nerd.  The ad hits its points but is different enough to that viewers might remember it.

More Herzog $$$

In the large contributions (below), three different Herzog companies are giving to a PAC, American Democracy Alliance - Ridgely PAC, which will presumably dole out the money this cycle.  It’s unknown if the money will all stay in the northeast, helping Graves-Roe-Lager candidates there, or find its way across the state.

The amount American Democracy received ($150,000) isn’t chump change.  But as a reminder of the obvious, it’s dwarfed by the cash sitting the in the RightPath PAC’s bank account: $2.4 million.

RightPath is the PAC to watch.

Farm Bureau Picks Bruce in CD-4

The Missouri Farm Bureau endorsed Kalena Bruce yesterday.  See it here.  That’s a big boost for her, though she trails in the all-important money race.

And

Rudi Keller says we’ll be seeing primary endorsements for the CD-7 race as well as the US Senate race coming soon from MOFarm.

·         Talk has Vicky Hartzler as the favorite for the US Senate nod.

NYTimes on MO Abortion Fight

NYTimes reports on Missouri politics as it looks at future fights over contraception services.

·         Last year, the Republican-led Missouri Senate voted to ban taxpayer funding for two common methods of preventing pregnancy: intrauterine devices and emergency contraception — the so-called morning-after pill, also known as Plan B — which many abortion opponents regard as “abortifacients” because they can prevent a fertilized egg from implanting in a woman’s uterus. Lawmakers later abandoned the effort, but some have indicated that if Roe falls, they may try again…

·         Missouri, one of 13 states with “trigger laws” that would immediately ban abortion if Roe is overturned, is becoming another front in the battle over birth control — and may foreshadow what is to come in a post-Roe world…

·         “I’m a devout Catholic and believe that life is sacred from the moment of conception until actual death,” said State Senator Paul Wieland, a Republican who led the effort, adding that he did not “want any of my dollars going to pay for things that kill human life.”

Anti-Walton PAC Formed

A recently formed PAC, CREW PAC, appears to be targeting Democratic state representatives associated with the Elbert Walton wing of St. Louis County politics.

It was formed earlier this month with the purpose of opposing the re-election of Reps. Neil Smith, Jay Mosley, Mike Person, and Alan Gray.

Of course filing a PAC doesn’t mean that it will be able to raise significant amounts of money.

See the paperwork here.  Its treasurer is Nick Kasoff.

National Journal on MO US Senate Race

National Journal has an article about Missouri’s US Senate race.  See it here.

·         DSCC Chair Gary Peters refused to rule out national party investment in the race, though. “We’re watching [the Missouri Senate race] really closely right now,” Peters told National Journal. “It's definitely a race.” He said that the party is going to wait until after the Aug. 2 primary before taking any further steps. “We're just going to wait to see how the actual vote comes through and who the Republican nominee is.”

·         Elaine Kamarck, a veteran Democratic strategist, didn’t sound too optimistic about Democrats’ chances in Missouri, which would justify the national party’s reluctance to invest there. She said she believes that the Democratic nominee needs to be a “suitably conservative candidate” if the party has any hopes of flipping the seat. This would favor Marine veteran Lucas Kunce, who is running a more populist campaign.
