MOScout Daily Update: Gov Calls for Special Session, Waiting on When - Soupy Hit Campaign Trail - $500K into School Choice PAC and more...
Soupy on the Campaign Trial
This seems like an appropriate way to return from the long holiday weekend. Jim Campbell, known in his NHL days as “Soupy,” is using the Campbell’s soup can as his campaign logo. It’s seen here in this party video on the Soupy for Congress Facebook page.
See the full 23-second video here.
His campaign website is apparently hosted on the JP Fields restaurant website. See it here. Campbell owns the Clayton haunt. (Clayton is not in – or anywhere near – the 4th Congressional District).
Ed Reformers Load PAC
The Missouri Federation for Children PAC received $500,000 from the mothership (American Federation for Children) over the weekend.
American Federation for Children is a school choice advocacy organization. According to their website, they “seek to empower families, especially lower-income families, with the freedom to choose the best K-12 education for their children.”
· Former Rep. Jean Evans is their Missouri point person.
· In Evans, former Missouri Republican Party Executive Director, they have someone who knows Missouri campaigns as well as the legislative process.
· It’s more likely we’ll be seeing independent expenditures for the candidates they support rather than campaign contributions.
Other Money Hits
It’s a big list at the bottom of this update because we had a three-day weekend as well as the end of the quarter when a flurry of checks usually hit. Other large contributions of note…
· $75K into Sen. Bill Eigel’s BILL PAC, and $50K from the Sinquefields into the pro-Caleb Rowden PAC, Missouri Forward. Both Eigel and Rowden are term limited. One assumes these PACs will support senators and would-be senators on their side of the Republican Senate civil war.
· In Senate 12, Delus Johnson write a $30K check to his campaign. Johnson’s not really on folks’ radar in that race, as the talk has mainly been about Reps. J Eggleston and Rusty Black. But this indicates he’s fully invested.
· MO Republican Attorneys for Civil Justice PAC doles out a few checks for Conservative Caucus-leaning PACs: 100 PAC, and 1776 PAC. It’s funded by a lot of well-known trial attorney names: Strong Garner Bauer, Brown & Crouppen, Langdon & Emison, Simon Law, for example. Folks have noted the ties between the Conservative Caucus and trial attorneys before.
· Elbert A. Walton Jr., powerbroker in North St. Louis County, is deputy treasurer for a PAC that received a $10K check, presumably to help those office-holders and office-seekers aligned with his coalition. The PAC’s name is North County Solidarity PAC LLC.
Gov Says He’ll Call Special Session – At Some Point
Also on Friday, the rumor about a possible special session was confirmed by Governor Mike Parson. He vetoed Cody Cash and the Ag bill, and said he’d be calling a special session to address the issues.
“Governor Parson is currently working with legislative leaders to identify a date for the special session call. Once a date is selected, additional details and proposed bill language will be released.”
Brunner Lit Piece
John Brunner, running in House 101 (old Derek Grier district), is getting some help from Defeating Communism PAC. One MOScouter tips, “The PAC had someone going door-to-door in the district last week.” See the lit piece here.
And indeed, there’s an MEC filing from Defeating Communism PAC for an independent expenditure of $49,200 for a “field program.” See the filling here.
· The phone number on the filing is associated with HenryAlan, an Axiom company.
