MOScout Daily Update: Sinquefield Backs Hoskins and Rowden - Opportunity Trust Gets Big Grant - Court Chatter and more...

1 Big Thing: Watching the Money

As big checks rolled in at the end of the fundraising quarter, here’s what caught my eye…

Rex Sinquefield sent $25,000 to both Sens. Denny Hoskins and Caleb Rowden who appear to be slated to be running against each other for secretary of state.  It would seem Team Rex isn’t picking a side (yet) in that race, but simply supporting folks who have been with them on their big issues of tax reform or educational choice.

State Treasurer Vivek Malek added another $100K of his own money.  I haven’t seen but one or two large checks for either Sen. Andrew Koenig or Rep. Cody Smith.  So it looks like Malek keeps his head start over his challengers.

Sen. Holly Thompson Rehder, running for lieutenant governor, recorded two big contributions.  She started behind Speaker Dean Plocher on the money race this quarter.  We’re expecting his announcement this month.

The pro-Phil Christofanelli Gladius PAC put together a couple nice checks including one from Washington University’s RightPAth PAC.  His PAC will certainly have the money lead against his rivals Rep. Adam Schnelting and Rich Chrismer.

And

Here’s how much the PACs of the governor candidates recorded in the last three months…

·       American Dream (Mike Kehoe) - $648,325

·       Believe in Life and Liberty (Bill Eigel) - $240,001

·       Liberty Committee (Jay Ashcroft) - $193,700

And, of course, Eigel presumably still has his national small-donor program in full swing as well.

Bailey to IA

Galen Bacharier reports on Twitter that “among the attendees at the Trump rally in Ottumwa, Iowa today: Andrew Bailey, the attorney general of Missouri.”

Why It Matters

·       Donald Trump holds sway over Republican primary voters.  Going to Iowa for Trump may not get you his endorsement, but it can’t hurt.

Opportunity Trust Lands $35M Grant

Press release: The Opportunity Trust is pleased to announce receipt of the Department of Education’s Charter School Program State Entity (CSP-SE) award of $35.5M over five years. This award marks a significant milestone as the first-ever CSP-SE award granted to the State of Missouri, which received the highest score of all applicants nationally. This federal grant will be a tremendous catalyst for the continued growth of Missouri’s high-performing charter public schools…”

Post- Dispatch reports that “the money will be used for 16 charter schools to serve 5,000 additional students.”

There’s a constant struggle in Jefferson City between the charter school forces and the traditional public schools.  The traditionals feel that money charters reduce the pot of money available to support their schools; charter advocates say anything that gives parents more choice is good for education as a whole.

·       This money – from the federal government – won’t be at the traditionals’ expense but probably isn’t welcome news for them either.

Court Chatter

Tipster says, “The appointment for the Perkins associate circuit judge vacancy in St. Louis City will announced be Wednesday… Bets are on Kate Dierker, daughter of former judge Robert Dierker prominent Republican who has worked Dowd firm, city counselors’ office and circuit attorney office after retirement.”

Dem Primary in House 15

Kenneth Jamison anted up $25,000 into his new committee.  He’s running for House 15 where Rep. Maggie Nurrenbern is running for state senate.  Jamison is an attorney.  See his profile here.  It says he’s a former Marine.

·       He faces Greg Smith, who formed his committee in July.  Smith is a UAW member.  See his profile here.

·       It’s a Democratic district; Biden outperformed Trump by 9.6% in 2020
