MOScout Daily Update: Patterson Says Abortion Ban “Not Working” - Kehoe Hits Quade on Gas Tax? - Pereles PAC Touts GOP Endorsements - Bean Checks and more…
Patterson: Abortion Ban Not Working
At the Lee’s Summit Chamber of Commerce candidate forum last night, Speaker-elect Jon Patterson addressed Amendment 3 (See it here. 47 minute mark).
He made three points.
· He said plainly that an abortion ban isn’t “working for Missouri.” Patterson, like Mike Kehoe, was snubbed by Missouri Right to Life. It’s probably good for House Republicans that their incoming speaker is showing independence from the premiere pro-life group in Missouri. It will give members cover to be more nuanced in their approach to the issue, and ultimately reduce the probability that the supermajority enacts laws that are out-of-touch with the majority of Missourians.
· But, he also said he wouldn’t vote for A3. The implication is that you can be pro-life and still not be comfortable with a total ban.
· Finally, crucially, he said he would respect the will of the people, signaling that he wouldn’t support an effort to undermine the A3 vote. Folks have mentioned passing a new ballot question through the legislature to reverse, in whole or part, A3 – should it pass. That would create a huge ticking timebomb for next session as it would guarantee a Senate filibuster from Dems. Patterson’s stance could avoid that scenario.
Here’s the soundbite on abortion…
And text of his full answer: “I don’t think an abortion ban works. I don’t think it’s working for Missouri. With regard to Amendment 3, I don’t think it’s something that I can support. But everybody’s going to go out and vote the way they feel in their heart. I think shouldn’t be how are you voting. I think the question should be what are you going to do when people vote. What I’ve told people is we should respect the will of the people. And we will. It will be the Law of the land. We have to go forward as the people decide. So I think that’s the question you should be asking people on the stage. The people are going to vote, and we have to respect the wishes of the people.”
Senate 15: Pereles PAC Touts GOP Endorsements
The pro-Joe Perles PAC, Fearless PAC, is touting endorsements from Republican mayors. With a GOP tilt to the district, Pereles needs to win the Independents as well as a few crossovers.
eMailbag: on Senate 17
Republicans say Senate 17 is very much in play…
· Senate Republicans are NOT abandoning Jerry Nolte.
· I don’t think Maggie [Nurrenbern] would have gone up on TV defending herself this week from one negative mail piece from MSCC if she was enjoying a double-digit lead.
Senate 23: Schnelting Scorecard Omits Abortion
In Senate 23, it’s interesting to see that Rep. Adam Schnelting’s “scorecard” on top issues doesn’t mention abortion. It’s an indication that in St. Charles, in a relatively safe Republican district, it’s an issue best not highlighted for GOP candidates…
Bean’s Caucus Checks
I mentioned earlier in the week about a $100,000 check from Sen. Tony Luetkemeyer’s PAC to the Missouri Senate Campaign Committee. One MOSouter notes Sen. Jason Bean, who is vying with Luetkemeyer for the Floor Leader position, is also giving, but has employed a strategy of supporting Republican candidates directly.
Yesterday’s check for $25,000 from Sen. Bean’s PAC to David Gregory brought his total contributions to Gregory to $57,400. That check also brings Bean’s total giving to Republican candidates to $159,825 for this election season.
· “[Bean] was the only Senate leadership candidate writing large checks during the primary.”
Kehoe Hits Quade for Supporting Gas Tax
Among the attacks in Mike Kehoe’s PAC latest ad (see it here) is that Crystal Quade “touted a massive tax hike as an investment.”
· There’s no sourcing in the ad, but it sure sounds like they’re talking about the gas tax which Kehoe himself championed.
Kehoe Cash
Kehoe has raised $2.5 million for his American Dream PAC since the August primary.
· What I’ll Be Watching: Does he unload it all in a barrage of ads for the general. Or does he sit on a large chunk as the start of a war-chest to dissuade any would-be 2028 primary challengers?
And
Politico looks at gubernatorial races (including Missouri). “The winners will have a huge impact on their states over the next four years, and some of them may emerge as future presidential contenders. Among the last eight White House occupants, four had previously served as governors.”
eMailbag: More 340B Fallout?
Saw the NYT story on PBMs creating pharmacy deserts because of what they are doing to independent pharmacies; with the passage of the 340B bill that enriches PBMs as contract pharmacies, independent pharmacies haven’t seen anything yet. Pharmacy deserts will lead to a huge Dust Bowl for the small pharmacies, sadly…
